Process...
Ed Racicot (Green Mountain Pottery's Artist) makes his pottery using a blend of
stoneware clays, chosen for their durability. Each unique stoneware piece is thrown
by hand on the Potter’s Wheel. Created, the piece is put aside for a few days to dry
to a state called ‘leather hard’. Once leather hard, another day is spent trimming the
stoneware pottery. It is here that Ed puts the final touches on the piece to perfect
the shape. This is also the last opportunity to affect the pliable clay.
Ed Racicot (Green Mountain Pottery's Artist) makes his pottery using a blend of
stoneware clays, chosen for their durability. Each unique stoneware piece is thrown
by hand on the Potter’s Wheel. Created, the piece is put aside for a few days to dry
to a state called ‘leather hard’. Once leather hard, another day is spent trimming the
stoneware pottery. It is here that Ed puts the final touches on the piece to perfect
the shape. This is also the last opportunity to affect the pliable clay.
Trimmed, the stoneware is then left to slowly dry, for up to two weeks. Then the
piece is again placed on the Potter’s Wheel where they artfully receive their
glazes. Once glazed, the stoneware pottery is again left to dry for a day or so.
Finally, all the Green Mountain Pottery goes into a kiln where it fires to about
2200 over a period of 18 hours or so. Once fired, the kiln and it's load of
stoneware pots from Vermont needs to cool. Cooling takes another 12 to 14
hours.
A slow firing time enhances the thermal shock properties of the stoneware clay
(thermal shock resistance is what keeps stoneware from breaking as it goes from
freezer to oven, being able to withstand severe, rapid temperature changes).
Slow cooling of the kiln also helps the unique glazes keep their brilliant colors.
Custom orders may be accepted as time allows.

about 20% of your orders' total for packing and shipping charges. The percentage goes down as the orders' total goes up.

Where are the items made?
All items are made by me, here in Vermont. The raw clay comes from Massachusetts and from Ohio, equally. Each piece of my
stoneware handmade pottery is made with 33% recycled clay. The oxides and minerals that I use to make the glazes come from
various places within the United States. The only pre-made items that I buy are the globes and burners for the oil lamps. The globes
are made in Mexico and the burners are made in China.
